Dairy Tech

Despite of facing difficulties in minimizing the production cost and maintaining the quality, the dairy industry is developing new products to boost up the sales. According to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), the average year-on-year growth rate of the dairy industry was 5.55% in FY 2018-19 which is gradually increasing in many categories. Bangladesh Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited, Brac Dairy, New Zealand Dairy Products Bangladesh Limited, Akij Food and Beverage, Abdul Monem Limited, Pran Dairy, Partex Star Group, Abul Khair Group, Nestle Bangladesh are the major industry players in the Dairy industry.

According to the general secretary of Bangladesh Dairy Farmers’ Association (BDFA), the growth of the industry is accelerated by the information technology, involvement of the youth and expatriates’ investment. 1,200,000 dairy firms are operating in the industry in which 9,400,000 people are involved directly or indirectly. The pasteurized milk market is dominated by Milk Vita, Aarong and Pran securing 80% market share. On the other hand, the milk powder market is dominated by Dano, Nido and Marks. Recently, a memorandum of understanding had been signed between Arla and MilkVita intending to share knowledge to develop the quality of dairy products to European standards.

A recent initiative by the government of Bangladesh is "Livestock and Dairy Development Project" aiming at creating a hub for dairy farmers from where the processed milk will go to large plants after collecting and processing milk. This is expected to create a new opportunity for the dairy sector to produce export quality milk. It is a government project supported by the World Bank with a budget of BDT 4,280. The project is started to ensure fair price for the farmers and turn them into entrepreneurs.
